Efficiencies. When American car companies started to get their asses handed to them by the Japanese in the 80s, they started to worry about saving money rather than making it. They started trying to make their cars share as many parts as possible in order to bring down costs, and that in the end is what brought them to their knees. GM is starting to get the hint that selling the same car under 30 different brand names doesnt make any sense or create cars that people actually want, so they're trying to get back to divisional indepedence and a return to design rather than cost cutting. Anyways, thats more or less why ford turns luxury cars into fords.
